The World’s Best Museum Restaurants

The words “museum food” probably conjure up images of overpriced, pre-made sandwiches and $10 bottles of water to be consumed among tired and desperate travelers. Fortunately, more and more museums are realizing that those who love great art also love great food. At these spots, we wouldn’t necessarily blame you for skipping the art and going straight to lunch.

Otium, The Broad, Los Angeles

The latest place to continue Downtown LA’s revitalization is contemporary art museum The Broad, so naturally it needs a hot new restaurant to accompany it. Enter Otium, the highly anticipated eatery from Timothy Hollingsworth right next door. Peep a few Los Angeles apartment rentals for an ideal home base on your next stop through LA and get a taste of the art scene.

M. Wells Dinette: MoMA PS1, New York City

It may look like a public school cafeteria, but the food here is nothing like what you remember from your school days. Québécois chef Hugue Dufour specializes in all things animal meat, so expect to see the likes of foie gras and rabbit on the chalkboard menus. And with Oasis on the scene since late 2015, offering an array of unique New York City apartments for rent, it’s even easier to pop inside for a quick bite.

Monsieur Bleu: Palais de Tokyo, Paris

If your restaurant comes with views of the Eiffel Tower, it’s easy to skimp on the food and let the views draw in the crowds, but fortunately, Monsieur Bleu’s menu is equal to its setting. After enjoying the contemporary art at the Palais de Tokyo, sample French cuisine at Monsieur Bleu – if you can get a table that is.

Untitled: The Whitney, New York

Great art doesn’t need a name, nor apparently does a great restaurant. Pompous name aside, Untitled is, in fact, a surprisingly inviting space to grab a bite to eat in the Meatpacking district and it’s helped make the new Whitney building one of the neighborhood’s biggest attractions.

Verde: Pérez Art Museum, Miami

Blood orange mimosas and pancakes overlooking the Biscayne Bay – we’re sold. Definitely snag an outdoor table here even if the Perez Art Museum isn’t on your agenda. At the very least, make your way down from your Miami apartment rental and walk off your lunch with a stroll through the museum grounds.

Museo Evita Restaurante: Museo Evita, Buenos Aires

If you’re perplexed by the omnipresent image of Eva Perón throughout Buenos Aires, visit the Museo Evita to get to know Argentina’s iconic first lady. But if you’re disappointed by the museum’s propaganda, rest assured there’s fantastic food waiting in the onsite restaurant. The area is surrounding the museum is also full of Buenos Aires holiday rentals, so there’s certainly no shortage of convenient accommodations.

Nerua: Guggenheim Bilbao, Bilbao |

Josean Alija’s Michelin-starred Nerua is one of Spain’s most innovative restaurants, though fortunately the menu isn’t so inventive as to be totally unrecognizable. If Nerua’s nine-course tasting menu is a little rich for your blood, try the Guggenheim’s more casual on-site restaurant, Bistró.

Òleum: Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, Barcelona

For a restaurant in the middle of a major museum, Òleum is surprisingly off the tourist grid. Located inside the former throne room of the Palau Nacional, it’s one of the most elegant dining rooms in Barcelona, with food to match. And although the area surrounding Òleum is chalked full of Barcelona apartments fit for a king, we must admit the Palau Nacional gives us Home envy.

Georges: Centre Pompidou, Paris

Are the prices outrageous? Certainly, but that’s to be expected when you’re sitting on top of the Pompidou Center. We recommend going after dark to see views of Paris all lit up while enjoying your foie gras and a glass of Bordeaux.
