Lost in LA: A Walking Tour of Abbot Kinney Boulevard

If you only had one day in Venice, California, we’d say skip the weirdness of the neighborhood’s famous boardwalk and go to Venice’s other main stretch – Abbot Kinney Boulevard. The Boardwalk is home to the beach and colorful characters that make Venice one of LA’s quirkiest areas, but it’s Abbot Kinney that makes it one of the city’s most stylish. Start at the intersection of Abbot Kinney and Venice Boulevard and make your way towards Main Street, following our recommendations for wining, dining, shopping and caffeinating as you go.

Kick your day off with brunch at either The Tasting Kitchen or Gjelina. If it’s the weekend, or really any day of the week, arrive early or be prepared to wait. But once you’re at a table, enjoy refreshing brunch cocktails, upscale modern American cuisine, and a young, good-looking wait staff (though the last is a given in almost all of LA).

You’ll need to walk off the eggs and mimosas with a bit of exercise – we recommend shopping. As you make your way down Abbot Kinney, stop at New York-based boutique Steven Alan to revamp your wardrobe, Aesop for a bit of pampering with luxurious balms, lotions and soaps, and A. Kinney Court for stylish eyewear.

After all that shopping, you’re probably ready for some refueling. You can keep shopping while you enjoy your coffee at TOMS Flagship Store, which stocks the brand’s well-known footwear and has a gorgeous patio and backyard for sipping on cappuccinos. Coffee connoisseurs might also enjoy the local branches of Intelligentsia Coffee, which is right across the street from TOMS, or Blue Bottle Coffee just two blocks away.

Of course, if you’re the kind of person for whom walking and shopping doesn’t cut it for exercise, catch a yoga or spinning class at YAS Fitness Center. Otherwise, make it a day of purely hedonistic pleasures and be sure to make a stop at Rag & Bone for a killer pair of jeans and local boutique Heist for a well-curated selection of designer brands. And if you’re not in the mood to max out your credit card, these stores are nonetheless an excellent option for window-shopping.

Wind up your day on Abbot Kinney with a round of drinks – nothing beats a craft beer or glass of wine at hip bar The Otheroom. After a few pints, you might even be willing to brave the crowds back on the Boardwalk.
